Founded in 1794, Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia is the Commonwealth’s oldest homeowners insurance company. Suffolk Insurance has been writing insurance with them since 1947.
Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia offers a Perpetual Policy whereby policyholders pay a one-time first-year premium and an annual assessment amount that is a percentage of the premium each year after that. In other words, once an assured pays the first premium, they never pay that full premium again. Instead, they pay a small percentage of the annual premium each subsequent year for the life of the policy. Premiums are based on the replacement value of the home. Yearly assessments rates are set by the Board of Directors and based on the gains and losses the company has sustained the prior year. In the 225+ year history of the company, this rate has never exceeded 37%.
Mutual Assurance is a very unique company and the only one in Virginia that does business this way. They are based in Richmond and are a Virginia-Only company. This means that losses in Virginia are the only ones that affect their annual assessment rate – unlike other insurance companies, catastrophic events in other parts of the country have no impact. Their customer service is outstanding and they are rated A (excellent) by the independent rating firm of A.M. Best Company and KBRA.
